Comments on Israeli news website Walla’s post on it’s Facebook page about the accident, showed despicable satisfaction and celebration by Israelis and a disgraceful wish there will be more of such:

Benny: Calm down, they are Palestinian Children.

Tali: It seems like they are Palestinian children.. Thank God..

Tal: Thank God they are Palestinians

Ajala: Great less terrorists!!!!

Eliya: Only Palestinian children were injured about ten.

Itai: Thank God its Palestinians, let it be such bus every day.

Aleyah: calm down, Its a bus with Palestinian children, lets pray there will be deaths, or at least severe injuries, this is great news to start the day with.

End of translation.

Please note the likes on each one of the racist and hateful comments.

And no one tells me this is exception and not the Israeli mainstream.

UPDATE February 17th

later on I found this screen shot on an Arab local website Bokra from Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamen Netanyahu’s officila Facebook page:

Here is the translation of some racist and gloating comments on his statement offering aid for PA:

Itzik: They will ask for money, since money is more important for them than children who died.

Shlomi: He should offer them Baklawa* hhhhhhhhhhhhh

Aourya: Let the Arabs die, why would we offer them help, let them handle it themselves

Erez: Can we send another trailer?

Riki: Another 2 trailers hhhhhhhhhh

Eliran: I would send a convoy of double trailers to wipe out all these shits

End of translation

*Baklawa is an Arab sweet, served usually in joyful events

Today, I attended with other comrades the weekly protest in the Palestinian village of Qaryout, south of Nablus. Qaryout hs joined the popular resistance last Friday. The village held in the past numerous marches and protests to resist the occupation and the settlements. This time, they are hoping to persist with the weekly protest.

After we lost our way for a while, we arrived to Qaryout, it’s a beautiful village located on a beautiful landscape, the only environmental hazard there, is the Israeli colonies.

As we arrived a little before the start of the rally, we had the chance to hear from some leaders briefing about the village and see some videos and pictures from last week.

Qaryout, inhabits 2800 residents, 68% of its land were confiscated to the advantage of the surrounding three Israeli settlements, Shilo, Aleh, Shvut Rachel. Recently another new outpost-settlement called “Adi Ad” was installed.

Protesting in Palestinian villages could be in many cases a risk of life, in Qaryout the risk is double. Settlers, the “landlords” are armed, they walk freely everywhere, just dare talk with them. Sometimes you don’t even need to, they come. According to the villagers, last Wednesday a settler entered the village with his car, and shot live bullets at a boy, but he did not hit him.

The road to their lands was blocked by the Israeli army; this road connects with the road to the main street, it’s the shortest way for Qaryout people to the main street, however, it’s for settlers use only. Lands on one side of the road are for settlers, the other for the Palestinians. These are the rules.

Last Friday Qaryout protestors managed to open it. And where hoping to get to their lands today in order to plant trees. The piece of the road they managed to pave was ordered by the army to be removed.

Quite often hundreds of settlers come to hang around on the remaining-still of their hands-lands of Qaryout, accompanied by the army.

In Qaryout you find the absurd of armed thieves behaving as landlords, while the owners of the lands might reach a level where the occupying army would be there only protection from those terrorists. While we were marching towards the lands, tear gas was shot and live bullets at the air. When we got closer we realized it was the settlers who shot. Not the army. We passed a settlement, and kept progressing. At some point, a jeep with four-five armed settlers was approaching from behind; they left only after the army went and talked with them so nicely. But they kept coming back and forth.

When we reach the army, who blocked us from approaching the lands, it was absurd; the army negotiating from the front, group of settlers standing and provoking behind them, some armed settlers with guns approaching and provoking from the back, others came down the hill, others stood up on the hill, all armed. It is as if you have to chose, and with those armed terrorists, you don’t want to take risk, they can shoot any moment.

When we couldn’t approach the lands, people planted some trees on the road side. One settler uprooted one, burned it and threw it at protesters. Another settler attacked verbally and almost physically protestors, under the eyes of the soldiers who have done nothing.

On the way back to the village, settlers threw stones at us, the young men of the village responded with stones, guess who got the tear gas and rubber bullets?

To summarize, the essence of apartheid is demonstrated very well in Qaryout: The colonialists walk freely, protected by the occupying army, and they are above the law. Palestinians, the land owners, with no access to their lands, and their rights are stepped over by no law.

Source: globalvoicesonline Translated from Arabic by: Mohamed ElGohary Arabic version published on January 20th, 2012

A few days ago a blogging initiative started under the theme:”For you, oh praying city, we blog.” It is a blogging campaign for Jerusalem, started by bloggers from Gaza. Many Palestinians and Arabs joined. The campaign goal was blogging and tweeting about Jerusalem till the 31st of January. This is not the first online campaign of its kind initiated by Palestinians. Since the beginning of the Arab Spring role of Social Media was heavily debated. In the Palestinian context, it’s very clear that there is an increasing tendency to use Social Media tools to deliver the Palestinian people’s message to the world. It’s worth nothing that in Gaza, these tools were effectively used by the youth before the Arab Spring, the siege on Gaza forced youth to utilize everything available to communicate with the rest of the world.

Social Media tools are a very important media between Palestinians at homeland, in the refugee camps as well as in diaspora to help them break all the boundaries, barriers and sieges. Communication became nearly daily. A camp resident can communicate with someone in Ramallah, with a Gazan, and even between someone from Jerusalem and an American Palestinian.

For example, recently, Palestinian bloggers worldwide issued several joint statements. One of them declared their refusal of the Muslim Brotherhood’s announcement of the “Saving Aqsa” Friday, while Tahrir revolutionaries announced it as a Friday to take down the military rule, after the brutal repression they faced from the army. The bloggers wrote in their statement: “We, a group of Palestinian youth, refuse to have Aqsa and Palestine’s names used against the great Egyptian revolution.” They ended the statement saying: “Palestine is stronger with Egypt freedom and nobility.” The statement became very popular between bloggers and was also picked up by Egyptian media. They also issued a statement in solidarity with the Syrian blogger Razan Ghazzawi and all the Syrian revolution detainees.

To mark the 24th anniversary of the first Intifada, bloggers launched a campaign inviting all Palestinian bloggers to dedicate a post in the 19th of January about stories or interviews with people who witnessed the first Intifada, or publishing related articles, photos or videos. The bloggers assured in their statement that the Intifada memory is a suitable moment to reassure “our faith in the Palestinian resistance as a basic part of our struggle for freedom and to earn the non-negotiable rights of the Palestinian people, and to continue struggling till the realization of freedom and the right of return.”

Many online activists organized campaigns that are focusing on a certain period, aiming at raising awareness and knowledge to those who follow the occupation practices. During the detainees’ hunger strike, young activists shared their solidarity on blogs, Facebook and Twitter. They also announced a one-day hunger strike in their support. Everyone participating was asked to announce that on social networks in the following format: “My name is …., today 12.10.11 I’m on hunger strike supporting the Palestinian detainees.” Following that, many Arabs and foreigners supported the idea and joined in. After the martyrdom of Mustafa Tamimi during the weekly demonstration in Nabi Saleh village, after an Israeli soldier shot a tear gas bomb in his face from just a few meters, social media activists organized a campaign where they blogged and tweeted under the hashtag #Israelkills to spotlight occupation crimes against Palestinians.

A lot from those youth see that activism online is not a substitute of activism offline, but compliments it since some are involved in civil resistance in the Palestinian villages like Al-Walaja, Al-Khalil, and others. Some people also arrange volunteering days for marches and different activities.

Considering the fact the youth enthusiasm online is no less than their colleagues offline, the past year witnessed many events and youth initiatives raising the peaceful resistance value. All this was done in ways which were creative and different than before. So we see the freedom waves and freedom riders, we see a march of cars that wanted to drive through the settlement streets protesting the apartheid regime. The march was stopped by the occupation army. Not to mention the “Welcome in Palestine” campaign in Ben Gurion Airport where visitors state clearly they have come to Palestine. They also organized the return marches commemorating the Nakba and the Naksa, along with volunteering days and street art activities. Two weeks ago, some special activity for an anonymous group was noticed, writing political slogans on Jerusalem walls, especially in Jewish dominated neighborhoods since 1948. This group mentioned in their statement that “This is our message to our occupiers and to our people in Palestine and in diaspora, we are telling them that we are here, our voice is still loud and we will continue to resist.”

These activities contribute to reviving Palestine. Many are engaged in photographing what is happening in real time, by live steaming or live blogging or via Facebook and Twitter, etc. This way the occupation is in a losing battle. Those who follow social networks know that the Israeli propaganda is not yet able to neutralize or fight the social media “army” who support the Palestinian cause.

The Palestinian Social Media activity contributes to telling the world the Israeli practices against the Palestinian people, thus supporting BDS as well as the daily communication between Palestinians wherever they are, integrating their efforts on their networks and coordinating their campaigns and joint activities offline.

These youth only agree to have big goals achieved, and they are not content with the frustration their people suffer from. Everyday they come up with a new idea and it is very difficult to break them. These youth prove edaily that resistance is not only via weapons, and that Israel didn’t succeed in frustrating them.

Lately I’ve been going to Jenin every 2-3 weeks with family members. We usually do our vegetable shopping in the city market.

Last Saturday, on our way back from Jenin to Nazareth, we were surprised to find a new technology to check the “suspected” cars at the Israeli checkpoint.

The checkpoint’s check usually goes like this: There are about six lines of cars going out through the checkpoint, on each there is 1-2 “security” officers that ask for IDs, and decide whether this car including, its riders, do or do not consist a major threat to Israel’s “security” and “existence”. If they do not, the officer gives the car a white ticket, which means they are done with the “security” check. If yes, then the car gets a green ticket. Once you get the green one, you have to go to the far right route into a special check. You are asked to open all doors, take out all your belongings and go through physical check while the car is been checked separately.

You never understand the logic and the considerations of any of the checkpoint’s officers. Sometimes our car gets the green and sometimes the white ticket.

Jenin checkpoint. photo by Abir Kopty

Last Saturday we got the green one, we went to the car’s check route and we were surprised with this little strange machine that looks like a hospital’s Infusion machine.

We were asked to roll up all windows and leave the two front windows 1cm open, exit the car and go through the physical check. Me and my brother started asking questions on this machine and what does it do etc. They refused to answer.

According to Haaretz, this machine is also used in Bethlehem checkpoint and I assume in many of the “privatized” checkpoints, where the state decided to outsource the managing of the checkpoint to private “security” companies in order to “civilianize” the checkpoints, another failed attempt to whitewash the occupation.

The procedure is described by Haaretz as the following: Two tubes are then connected to the vehicle – one is connected to an air pump, the other, which passes through a tiny filter, is attached to the vehicle. A policeman with a stopwatch flicks the air pump switch.

Jenin checkpoint. Photo by Abir Kopty

If you check the pictures carefully you can see clearly a small box connected to the tubes with unknown material, which is believed to be, as International workers told Haaretz, “nausea-inducing chemicals”.

When we got back to the car, there was a slight strange smell and we felt slightly dizzy, we were not sure if this is our “wild imagination” or is it something that was sprayed into the car.

Human rights organizations, should take initiative and obtain sample of the material being used, and examine it. I’m almost sure; it will include prohibited materials, tested on Palestinians first, to be then marketed to the world as a new technology from the “successful” Israeli military industry.

Palestinians for Syria

21/01/12 is the Global Day Of Rage For Syria

A peaceful revolution…a revolution against foreign intervention…a revolution against sectarianism and factions. This is the revolution of the Syrian people we know.

For ten months now the Syrian people have marched towards freedom and we have no doubt that they will achieve their liberation. For this reason we see it as a duty to warn them of the dangers of foreign intervention and to express our support for their peaceful revolution against sectarianism and factions.

For ten months the Syrian people have marched steadily towards freedom, despite the criminal oppression of Bashar al-Assad’s regime which uses weapons against its own people, instead of using them to liberate their occupied land, and despite the disagreements among their representatives whom the people gave trust in.

For ten months the Syrian people have marched towards freedom as martyr after martyr is sacrificed, which has only strengthened their resolve and steadfastness to continue their march.

For ten months the Syrian people have marched towards freedom as the world analyzes the meanings behind slogans raised in protests, and satellite channels have garnered more viewers with the increase in bloodshed and murders. The media sells to its viewers talks of a conspiracy or of a civil war, and many powers, sells us their support to freedom or democracy in the Middle East, when they never did. We are confident that these plots will fail and be crushed under the feet of the Syrian Arab People.

Ten months and we have avoided watching the disfigured bodies and the brave women who do not fear facing the live ammunition. Ten months and we chose which channel to hear from about the news of 30, 70, 100 martyrs of Syria, which made us ashamed from our miserable show of solidarity, as at the end of every day dozens of families lose their sons and daughters, with seemingly no one to share their pain with.

We, Palestinian activists and bloggers, on the Global Day of Rage for Syrian Revolution, stress our support for the brave revolutionary Syrians. We strongly reject manipulating the Palestinian cause as a cover under which the Syrian martyrs’ bodies are brushed under and stamped upon by Bashar al-Assad’s regime. It is true we must think logically about the dynamics of the Syrian revolution, but we must put the overwrought analyses aside, because the cost is the blood of our Syrian brothers and sisters. We reiterate our support for the peaceful Syrian revolution and its rejection of foreign intervention amidst the threats of sectarianism, as without our solidarity and faith we have no right in theorizing and preaching to the Syrians who are being murdered one after the other.

Dear friends,

Those who are here and those who are spread all over the world, those in academic institutions, political parties, theatres, human rights organisations, students, workers, and everyone of You, please consider this email addressed to you personally.

Some of you might be aware of the latest racist Israeli supreme court decision from yesterday, that threatens to separate tens of thousands of Palestinian family members apart. This decision in addition to 25 laws and laws proposals are designed to segregate and discriminate against the Palestinian minority inside Israel. These racist laws have one goal: to bring to a situation where this state, should be only for a Pure race: Jewish! The deportation can start with Palestinian spouses today who are married to Palestinians inside Israel, but tomorrow it will be the overwhelming majority of Palestinians in Israel, if not all !

Yes, i feel very pessimistic! Yes i feel that a deportation of my wife and its separation from me and from my children is real ! It is a black day in my life and the life of tens of thousands of people in my situation! Deportation had not only become real but legalized!

I am writing to ask you to act in the name of humanity and human rights, which the Israeli supreme court had legalized a war against them, as it declared the war against us, we the “other”, it gave the green light for all security services to act in the name of LAW! The supreme court was the last shelter for defending human rights in Israel, and now it had shut its doors to Rights, and kept the Humans (Palestinians) out without any protection.

Below you will find some articles explaining the current racist law and also some articles or interviews with me and my family, there is also the TV interview (in Hebrew). Please contribute your part in fighting Israeli racism and spread the word, articles, and all what you find in regard of this law to ALL your friends in your Email, social networks, facebeook, twiter, and others, in order to raise the awareness mainly in Europe and in US to what is going on inside the so called “Democratic” state of Israel. Please do not let it stop by your email, spread and make the voice loud against this racist and discriminative actions!

To all of you who sent me emails, called, and express their solidarity with our case, i would like to say thank you, (especially my Israeli friends who denounced the law and told me, that the law doesn’t speak in their name, and that they feel ashamed of such a decision, for expressing solidarity with yourselves in the first level, and with me and my family on the second level, Racism against the Palestinians inside Israel, will not stop by them, it will continue further to the Jewish Israeli society, as it is becoming clear in the last period.

I will end my email with a citation from the great intellectual Said:

Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere… and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a notable ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.”

Edward Said

I hope this just cause can get to as much as people as you can, as it is one of the last ways of fighting fascist decisions, raise your voice against the Apartheid!

Yours

Taiseer

This Friday, the weekly rally in the village of Nabi Saleh had a different smell for some of us.

We arrived early morning and learned that the Israeli army just left the village, after a raid that started at 2am. They raided more than ten houses using dogs, terrorized the families and children and detained three residents, Anan (15), Mahdi (20) and Khaled (27).

Army raid to Nabi Saleh 13.1.2012 Photo by Zeinab Tamimi

Despite the heavy rain and freezing cold there was a good turn out. The demonstration started as usual after the Friday’s noon prayer. Minutes before the demo started, heavy rain began. However we all walked, chanted and sang while shivering and freezing.

Usually we walk towards the entrance of the village in an attempt to reach the spring through the main road, at the entrance the soldiers wait for us, the moment we are 200m away, they start shooting tear gas directly towards us. Today, for the first time ever, they did not shoot tear gas at all, and we managed to get closer than usual. But they were ‘kind enough’ to spray us with the skunk water, which never reached us due to the strong wind and rain. Even when the rain stopped, the wind would still move the water away from us.

We were about 20 people, mostly women, at the front, 20-30m from the soldiers and the skunk water’s truck, still no tear gas. “How come?”, “What’s is wrong with them?” we asked ourselves. In fact, many of us, became addicted to tear gas, we need to inhale it every week.

Even when the Shabab-youth of the village started throwing stones from far away, the army did not respond. All of the sudden, the stones no longer “endanger” life . Soldiers could survive it without using arms.

There were two debated reasons for why we are not going to get our weekly dose of tear gas. One, that there was an American delegation of lawyers and scholars who were visiting Nabi Saleh and present at the rally. The other reason, also possible, that the tear gas will not work in this windy and rainy weather.

So, completely wet, shivering and freezing, we dared to come closer, to the closest point were the skunk water can’t reach us. It was very close. And this, it turned out, was the trap. The skunk pulled full gas, moved towards us and started spraying, everyone started running, but it was too late, we all got showered all over. The hair, body, clothes. Shitty and stinky smell was all over. If you ask me, I would rather inhale tear gas all day, even get rubber bullet than getting one drop of skunk water.

Nabi Saleh 13.1.2012

When the skunk stopped, it was one of the craziest scenes we viewed. We started all laughing, joking and hugging each other. We even started hugging those who did not get sprayed so we pass for them some of the ‘grace’. And that’s how the demonstration ended. No one could bear his\her or others’ smell and just wanted to rush back home.

Before saying good bye, people of Nabi Saleh advised us to scrub our hair with tomato and our skin with water and salt.

On our way back, we were four stinky people in the car and could not open the window since it was raining & freezing. We made fun of ourselves for the rest of the day. One decided to call us his “skunk comrades”, another created the hashtag #SmelllikeAThawri” (Thawri for revolutionary), one said her mother threw her shoes outside the house, another, who got the skunk via a hug, demanded a new jacket. One expected a long week with lots of tomatoes, and another wanted to give stinky hugs to everyone.

I think this picture with a quote of one of us says it all: “We Palestinians are crazy & Israeli army is right in hating us, we are skunked but still laughing & hugging”

Nabi Saleh 13.1.2012 photo by Activestills

In one month we experienced deep sorrow and grief after Mustafa Tamimi was murdered by Israeli army, and we experienced deep sarcasm and crazyness after we got sprayed with skunk water. It is the greatness of becoming part of the Nabi Saleh family.

It will take at least one week until the smell gets away of our bodies, and perhaps we will continue to joke about it for sometime, I guess because we understand that this is not our biggest problem. What really stinks is the occupation, and that’s the smell we want to get rid of.

2011, a year was good for some people and bad for others, a year that has united some families and separated others, a year of liberation for some nations and for others, a year of poverty, lack of power and continuous oppression.

Myself 2011 held many insights in my personal, professional and political activism. Of all the years I remember, 2011 was a very good one for me. I made new friends, took several decisions, started things and continued others.

In the very beginning of 2011, I happen to be in Cairo when the Egyptian revolution erupted. I was lucky to be there and had the privilege to spend my time among the amazing people in Tahrir who taught me so much. Even though the revolution does not look like going on the right track, I still believe that Egyptians have changed history forever and the good yet to come, even if it will take longer than people hope.

Here are the diaries I wrote from the days of the Egyptian revolution in Arabic.

Since it was my first visit to Egypt, I decided to come back again as I felt very much connected with Egypt, but after applying and denied visa twice, I was disappointed. The Israeli passport I hold allows me entry to many countries, especially European without visa, something that always made me wonder, how come Israel continues to enjoy those privileges despite its continuous violations of human rights and International law. So as Israeli citizen, I do benefit from this privilege, I think the Palestinian citizens of Israel are the only Arabs allowed entry to European countries without visa. On the other hand, we can’t enter most of the Arab countries, it is the siege imposed on us being the Palestinians who remained on our lands. I believe it is about time to break this siege.

Like all my Palestinian and Arab peers, I have watched and followed all Arab revolutions, day-by-day and hour-by-hour. We are watching them now being stolen and disrupted by foreign, western and even Arab hands. Even though things are getting confusing and suspicious towards the development of some revolutions, I haven’t lost faith in the people who made them. Yes, revolutions might be disrupted, but the heroes who made them will always be there to fix the path, they will have dark years but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

On personal development, 2011 made me realize I can’t be a “good” politician, I resigned from my post as a member of the city council of my beloved city Nazareth, where I served as member since 2008. I took this decision as a revolting act against behaviors and decisions taken which I did not agree and could not accommodate with. I have truly realized that I can never be part of a system, any system. I have been my whole life a rebellion and therefore, it looks like I can never be a “politician”: I do not compromise.

2011 was the year of self-learning and insights, I attended a coaching program, something I only did after two amazing friends pushed me for, and I’m so grateful for them. I’ve learned so much about myself and realized the greatness of the people who made up my life. I’ve learned to overcome my fears and dare to think big. To appreciate what I have and yet understand that all is possible for me. However, I’m not and will not be perfect; life will still teach me a lot.

In our continuous attempt for resistance, we loose brave people. In the village of Nabi Saleh, Mustafa Tamimi, 28 years, a brave comrade, was murdered on December 9th by Israeli army for taking part in the Palestinian popular resistance. For many of us who used to join Nabi Saleh’s weekly rallies, it was a shock. Mustafa was not the first, and perhaps, won’t be the last to be killed by Israeli army in cold blood, his murderers are still in uniform, and might soon kill other Palestinians. One soldier pulled the trigger, and Mustafa was killed by the occupation that must end. Mustafa’s story became familiar to many because it became strong on social media, but his story is the story of many Palestinians unknown to many, and it might one day become Khalid Said or Buazizi of Palestine. We will not let it go.

I wish the year 2012 will bring justice to Mustafa and every Palestinian.

This will be my first wish for 2012. My wishes are big, but not impossible, I wish this year will bring the Palestinian spring. I have never lost hope and will continue to struggle against all the frustration and recklessness threatening my people. Optimism is a responsibility, not a choice. That is my belief.

I’m working on particular project and I wish it would see the light this year. It will need your support even if you know nothing about it now.

I wish all the best to my family, my great father and mother, beloved sister and brother, whom without them, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.

I wish my friends and beloved ones a year of fulfillment.

I wish for my comrades to take our struggle for the freedom of Palestine, to the next level.

I commit to be there to empower and support everyone who needs me.

Last, I dedicate this poem by the Turkish poet Nazim Hekmet, to all of you: “The most beautiful sea, hasn’t been crossed yet. The most beautiful child, hasn’t grown up yet. Our most beautiful days, we haven’t seen yet. And the most beautiful words I wanted to tell you, I haven’t said yet.”

Happy New Year!
